Devlog 1. Research and Rules
Hello!
If you are reading this, I just want to say thank you for taking time and checking out my game. I have been researching more about Rome and the fire that engulfed it while Nero was ruling. I haven't fact checked everything but I came across some interesting things that I think will influence the future development of the game.
- Rome's population at the time was around one million people.
- The fire burned at about 1000 degrees. This was hot enough that wood was just combusting.
- The fire burned for 6 days. The Roman's got it under control but it reignited and burning for another 3 days.
Now imagine being a lower class Roman, traveling for days to escape this burning hellscape, all while people are roaming and taking advantage of the situation. Centurions were around helping those they could but there were also rumors that they were killing people who were trying to put out the fire. Throngs of people were seeking safety.
Future Plans.
New Units.
I have been messing around with other factions who would break some of the core rules here and there. Mainly, I am imagining a horde of under-equipped Romans wandering the streets stealing everything they could. The idea here is to give the player more coins to gamble with but removing the safety net of the equipped weapons and items.
I am also looking at a smaller unit that is composed of elite Centurions. These guys will do the opposite. They will have less coin to gamble with but they will be bolstered by having sword, shield, and spear equipment (maybe more) available to them at all times.
Expand Crew Size.
Each crew/gang will be abut 12. This is your roster of fighters. You can select which ones to deploy at the beginning of the mission after initiative has been determined. The cohorts will field the standard 6 models but other factions may field more or less.
Change Down Mechanic.
With this expanded roster of fighters, I thought it might be good to change this mechanic some. I think this will allow players to set traps for each other more effectively and give them more options on the battlefield. The rule change will be something along the lines of when a character is downed, players can pay to respawn their model. Instead of just picking that model up, players may choose to replace that model with any inactive model from their roster, placing the new model within 3 inches of the downed model. The idea behind this is that Rome is crowded. Your cohort is every where. You have fighters hiding in the shadows, ready to deploy.
Prayer Mechanic.
During the development of this game, multiple people thought I should add some Roman Gods into the game. After some research, I came up with a list of Gods/Goddesses that I think would fit. The prayer mechanic would allow a model that might not be in the best position to pray to a God. This God will then provide a boon for the next model of that cohort.
Vulkan- Move fire token
Portunus- Move through a wall or other piece of terrain without hinderance
Carmenta- The next cohort member to activate can switch their weapon profile.
Minerva- Grants the next cohort member an extra move
Jupiter- Sky darkens. Weapon range is lessened. (Maybe this even stops ranged attacks)
Apollo- Range restraints are lifted from ranged weapons
This is everything that I have been working on. I am waiting for the One Box Wargame contest to end so I can continue development of this game on the Rules of Carnage Discord.
